Today Yoko and I visited Ikku shrine to wish for good luck in the coming year. There were so many people. Apparently double the number of last year turned up to pray and get this years lucky charms. We got our own charms and a couple of omikuji. I am usually quite good at choosing omikuji. According to mine, this year I will have good health aside from the odd cold or two, do well in my studies and have good luck in love. I couldn`t hope for more!! Come on 2012!!!
Mgrの年!”It's cool !! Dragon!!")

On Monday we decided to check out the autumn leaves, now that it`s winter already. Last year we wanted to see the 3 falls around Niihama that are mentioned as good sightseeing spots. Choshi falls was beautiful. Unfortunately Mado falls and Kiyo Falls weren`t accessable at that time and we discovered you still cant go to Kiyo falls due to a landslide. In the first photo you can almost make out what might be the waterfall in the distance. There other waterfalls we found along the way. We did see some nice autumn leaves though. I dont think it`s quite the right season to check them out yet as there`s a lot of green still but I think we were able to get some nice photos. The best place we visited was on our way back home from Kiyo falls. We stopped in at Zuonji temple and there were some great photo opportunities. The one on the far right is my arty photo. See how the leaves are balanced perfectly and the brilliant yellow colours!! I am like Van Gogh or something.
I attended one of the students at our school`s tea ceremony event in Niihama. I was very impressed with the children`s concentration while serving the tea and even when they were walking in and out of the room I could tell that they were really focussed. I`m really glad that children are still interested in traditional things such as tea ceremonies. It makes me happy to think that in the future these traditions will be kept alive by these children.
Yoko wasn`t in Niihama this weekend so I thought I`d use the free time to do a llttle exploration. Near Aeon Mall I was excited to discover these steps leading into the sky. I ascended them to the top, counting as I went. At the top there was a great view of Niihama. Im sure you can see my house from there. You can definately make out the baseball stadium and the sea, but this wasnt the end of the path. I followed the path to its natural conclusion at the fence in the picture. I think it might be a sewage works. Anyway I think there were 186 steps in all. I lost count somewhere in the middle so if someone is interested in a great view, climbing steps or pipes, I`d be very grateful if you could check if my count is right. Thanks a lot.
こちらも本当感動いたしました~☆ On our way to the station Yoko and I came across a shrine that was especially well hidden. We had to cross a railway track to get to it. When we had crossed over and Yoko saw the steps leading up to the shrine she did her usual thing and pretended that she had difficulty breathing so she couldnt climb it, but I didnt believe her and I dragged her up to the top. At first glance it seems like an ordinary shrine but there is a little path beside the building which goes even higher up the hill. I said hoorah and Yoko pretended she had hurt her leg so I dragged her up further.
At the top there was a kind of stone monument. Yoko had a look and it turned out that it was actually the spirit of Ishizuchi mountain!! I dont know how it got up there!! Anyway I decided it was important that I know where it is and I told Yoko "If ever we are climbing Mount Ishizuchi together and you slip and you are hanging from the cliff from a vine, I promise I`ll drop everything I`m doing and run as fast as I can to the Ishizuchi spirit shrine and pray for you!!" By the way, if anyone knows the name of this shrine please let us know because we couldnt find it anywhere.
We visited (瑞應寺 zuiouji) a temple in Niihama over the weekend. Apparently it is where the monks do their training and we saw some monks working away cleaning the leaves and fallen fruit. It was beautiful and I particularly liked the little path that led up to further temple grounds higher up the hillside. There was a zen garden where the pebbles had been patterned and shaped to look like water flowing. It was really nice. There were also many mosquitoes that day because it was the day just after the typhoon so manager san`s legs looked like cucumbers after all of the bites she received.
Last weekend there was a high school comedy event in Niihama. I was in the audience. Niihama school did quite a funny routine with a spoon. I have to admit my Japanese ability still isnt so great yet even though I have lived in Japan for almost 7 years. I couldnt understand a lot of what was said but the winners sketch was on high school teachers pronouncing English words exactly as they are written so that students can get higher scores on written spelling tests. I was quite funny. I wonder if Ill see him on tv someday? |
